Plan Your Visit

The practical bits, before you head uphill.

Getting Here & Parking

Start: upper Tunnel Road, Santa Barbara, California. The approach is through a residential neighborhood. Walk uphill to the road-end gate to begin the hike.

Parking is limited along Tunnel Road. Obey signs and marked boundaries, keep driveways clear, and leave room for residents and emergency access. Busy days can mean a longer walk to the start.

Two approaches, one viewpoint

The longer approach begins on Jesusita Trail by the Cater water treatment plant on San Roque Road. It is a different outing; the distance and timing above apply to the Tunnel Road approach.

Choose Your Timing

Expect both sun and shade along the route. A cooler part of the day makes the exposed stretches more comfortable. Leave time to walk back before dark, especially if you stop at the overlook.

Check the forecast and local trail notices before setting out. Rain can change the creek crossing and leave dirt and rock slippery. Follow any closures or restrictions posted at the trailhead.

A Simple Packing List

  • Drinking water for everyone, including dogs
  • Sun protection and a hat
  • Footwear with good grip
  • An offline trail map and a charged phone
  • A bag for litter and dog waste
  • A light if your plans might run late
