The Hike to Inspiration Point

From the road-end gate to the coastal views.

  1. Start at Tunnel Road

Walk to the gate at the end of the road. Follow the paved access road uphill; it later changes to dirt.

  2. Join the Jesusita Trail

Continue past the turnoff for Tunnel Trail. Take the left-hand Jesusita Trail toward Inspiration Point and cross the creek. Follow the established trail and signs.

  3. Climb through the chaparral

Switchbacks gain the ridge. At the upper dirt road, the overlook area opens toward Santa Barbara and the coast.

  4. Enjoy the view. Retrace your steps.

Take time at the viewpoint, then return by the same route to Tunnel Road. Continuing west on Jesusita Trail leads toward a different trailhead.

Getting Here & Parking

Start: upper Tunnel Road, Santa Barbara, California. The approach is through a residential neighborhood. Walk uphill to the road-end gate to begin the hike.

Parking is limited along Tunnel Road. Obey signs and marked boundaries, keep driveways clear, and leave room for residents and emergency access. Busy days can mean a longer walk to the start.

Two approaches, one viewpoint

The longer approach begins on Jesusita Trail by the Cater water treatment plant on San Roque Road. It is a different outing; the distance and timing above apply to the Tunnel Road approach.

A Few Common Questions

Is this a loop?

No. The Tunnel Road outing described here returns along the same route.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, on a leash. Bring water for your dog and pack out waste.

Is there shade?

There is some shade through the chaparral, but also exposed stretches. Plan for sun and warm conditions.

Is the whole hike paved?

No. The paved start gives way to dirt trail, a creek crossing and switchbacks.

Are Seven Falls and Tunnel Trail part of this route?

They are separate destinations in the same trail network. For this hike, follow the Jesusita Trail connection toward Inspiration Point.
